Spark Plug Gaps Increase as the Electrodes Wear
Every spark plug has a specified gap between its center and ground electrodes. Each time the plug fires, a tiny amount of electrode material wears away. Over thousands of miles, the gap gradually becomes wider.
A wider gap requires more voltage from the ignition coil. If the plug is badly worn, the coil has to work harder every time it fires. Cooler temperatures can expose that weakness during startup, when battery voltage and ignition demand are already working against each other.

Drivers sometimes describe this as a brief stumble or flat spot that is strongest during the first few minutes of driving and fades as the engine warms.
Do Not Assume Every Cold-Start Problem Is a Spark Plug
Spark plugs are common maintenance items, but they are not responsible for every hard start or cold misfire. Weak ignition coils, low fuel pressure, injector problems, vacuum leaks, sensor faults, and a weak battery can create similar complaints.
